Are you DTR?
That was one of Trav’s taglines. Several years ago we had a group of high school girls stay at our house for a youth event. As they sat in our …living room snacking on junk food and laughing about the latest fiasco at school, we over heard one of the girls say they were waiting for a guy to DTR. Under his breath, Trav asked what “DTR” meant. I shrugged. This acronym was new for us, so instead of asking the girls, Trav inferred that it must mean “Down To Ride.” Of course! This made sense. You’ve been talking to a guy for several weeks now, he needs to decide. Is he down to ride, or isn’t he. We later learned that DTR (per Facebook definition) meant to define the relationship. But it was too late. DTR was something Trav used to determine if you were in or out. If you were one of Trav’s people, you know that “we ride together, we die together. Bad boys for life.”
If you were DTR that meant you were in, up for whatever. Whether it be to drive all the way into the medical center to drop off a form for a clinical trial, or to make a trip to New York to deliver a bible to his best friend after he passed away. This Thursday, September 15, Trav would be 32. He delighted in sharing the gospel with anyone. God is love, and this was Trav’s way of sharing The Love with those around him.
In honor of Trav, I want to know: Are you DTR? This Thursday we are going to fill up our home, our workplaces, our schools, our communities, and our city with love by paying it forward. When you wake up Thursday morning, plan on paying it forward. This can be done by getting the person’s drink or lunch behind you at the drive thru or slipping an anonymous note to a co-worker who’s been struggling. My hope is that we saturate our city and social media with so many acts of paying it forward, that it only induces more love! So, that is the gift request that I’m making for Trav’s birthday this year. Love on somebody. #areyouDTR
